Frequently Asked Questions

The Test of English as a Foreign Language, more widely known as the TOEFL test, is owned by Educational Testing Services (ETS). ETS is a not-for-profit organization that is based in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. There are two versions of the TOEFL exam: TOEFL iBT and TOEFL Essentials. Both TOEFL tests assess your English language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. The main differences between the two are that the TOEFL iBT test is a longer test (approximately 2 hours in duration) and has been approved by more than 12,000 universities, colleges and countries’ immigration departments around the world. Unlike TOEFL iBT, the TOEFL Essentials test is shorter (approximately 1.5 hours) and is approved by several hundred universities and colleges. TOEFL Essentials has not yet been approved for immigration purposes. So if you are planning to migrate, then TOEFL iBT is the test for you. You can take the TOEFL test online with the TOEFL iBT Home Edition or you can find a TOEFL test center near you. If you are taking the TOEFL test for immigration purposes, you must attend a TOEFL test centre because Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA do not accept the Home Edition for immigration purposes. To achieve the TOEFL score you need, you need to be familiar with all parts of the TOEFL test. You need to learn tips & strategies for tackling each question type successfully. You also need to complete lots of practice, with TOEFL practice activities, TOEFL practice assessments and TOEFL practice tests. Plus, you need support from real teachers who are TOEFL experts, through one-on-one tutorials, live classes and feedback on your Speaking and Writing. The TOEFL test is scored based on your performance in four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Each section is scored out of 30 points, making the total possible score 120 points. The scores for each section are combined to give a total score. The TOEFL exam preparation often involves understanding how these sections are scored to help you improve your performance. If you’re taking a TOEFL course, your instructors will help you learn strategies to maximize your scores in each section.

TOEFL test dates vary throughout the year. You can find specific dates and registration deadlines on the official TOEFL website or by checking with local test centers. If you are considering taking a TOEFL test online or through a TOEFL course online, make sure to check the registration deadlines and available test dates to plan accordingly.

The TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is the most common format and is administered online. It includes four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. The TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Test) is less common and is administered on paper. It includes three sections: Reading, Listening, and Writing, but does not have a Speaking section. Most modern TOEFL courses and TOEFL test online options prepare you for the TOEFL iBT, as it is the format widely accepted by institutions.

The TOEFL iBT test takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete, including breaks. It consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Each section is timed, and the total test duration may vary slightly depending on the specific testing setup. If you are preparing through a TOEFL course or taking a TOEFL online test practice, you will get familiar with the timing and structure of the test.

When taking the TOEFL test, you should bring a valid photo ID, such as a passport or national ID card, as well as any confirmation documents for your test registration. If you're taking the test online, ensure you have a quiet, distraction-free environment, a reliable computer, and the necessary software installed. TOEFL online test preparation often includes guidance on what to have ready on test day.

There is no universal "passing" score for the TOEFL, as requirements vary by institution or program. However, many universities and colleges require a minimum total score ranging from 60 to 100. For specific score requirements, refer to the admissions criteria of the institutions you are applying to. Engaging in TOEFL classes online or a TOEFL course can help you aim for the scores needed by your target institutions.
